How to Maximise the Health Benefits of Your Cheeseboard

Cheeseboards are a delightful addition to any gathering, offering many flavours and textures. However, maximising their health benefits while relishing their flavours requires a certain level of skill. Eva Humphries, BANT registered nutritionist at KYN, shared some tips on enriching your cheeseboard's health value, making it not just a delicious treat but also a nourishing option for your guests.

Choosing the Right Cheeses:
Mature cheeses like Parmesan, Blue Cheese, and Vintage Cheddar aren't just flavourful, they are rich in leucine, a protein component especially valuable for helping older individuals retain more muscle. Additionally, cheeses like Red Windsor, Wensleydale, and Roquefort are a great source of calcium. This element is essential for strong bones and plays a role in other processes such as muscle contractions, nerve function and heart rhythm regulation. Furthermore, an unexpected perk lies in Parmesan's probiotic potential. Italian scientists discovered that probiotic bacteria from Parmesan can colonise the human gut, adding a natural probiotic element to your cheese platter.

Nutrient-Rich Pairings:
Pairing your cheeseboard with grapes can contribute toward achieving your 10-a-day fruit and vegetable target. Grapes' skin and seeds are full of anti-inflammatory polyphenols, supporting a healthy digestive system. Figs, both fresh and dried, are nutrient-dense fruits, rich in fibre, iron, magnesium, and other essential nutrients. They contribute to your daily fruit intake and deliver a substantial nutritional boost.

Protein-Rich Choices and Hydration:
For older individuals with reduced appetites, prioritising protein-rich snacks like meats or hams on the cheeseboard helps meet their nutritional needs. Older individuals are at greater risk of dehydration. Therefore, make sure that water, sparkling water or caffeine-free teas are readily available. When it comes to alcohol, studies from the University of Reading reveal a correlation between Champagne consumption and a lowered risk of dementia due to the antioxidants present, which are also found in organic wines. Nonetheless, moderation is key, so limit wine intake to 1-2 glasses.

Timing and Activity:
Enjoy your cheeseboard earlier in the day to support digestion. Following your meal, engaging in a leisurely walk aids in regulating blood sugar levels and further enhances the digestion process.

Your cheeseboard isn't just a culinary delight; it's a canvas for health-conscious choices. With strategic cheese selections, thoughtful accompaniments, balanced drink options, and timing considerations, you can elevate your special occasions while nurturing your well-being.
